The Right to Freedom of Speech (21st c. Revision)

I declare freedom of speech, in voice and in writing,
for all human beings,
whereby words of language have restrictions
only as naturally imposed
by societal norms (as preferance to law)---
such limits as follows:

1) the natural Right of Respect for others,
this inherent social norm defined as
expression of value, appreciation, and compassion towards the other.
(see previous posts The Right to Respect and The Right to Disagree)

and

2) the natural Right of Security
that all persons are born with,
where one is free of threat to one's safety.

Thus, our words shall be respectful and non-threatening, agreement or disagreement.
This 2011 revision of prior declarations
(which have shown to be too broad and vague in definition)
was created for clarification purposes.

Note that, here, the focus is on speech--- apart from
other forms of communication, such as expression, religion, and petition.

Freedom of speech is an evolving concept, and, as we confront new ideas, the great debate continues. The emergence of the Internet is but the latest in a series of challenges to understanding what the First Amendment protection of speech means in today's society. ☝

at a point of someones life, they regret the things they should have said when they had the chance, and i think if you know what you have to say, then you should speak and say what is on your mind, because who else is gonna do it for you?

The right of speech is one we should all practice. We should not be afraid to say what is on our mind. As long as what we have to say does not disrepect others.

The right to freedom of speech is something that we all take part in. Say what you mean and mean what you say is the right to freedom of speech.

Truthfully, if someone is irritating or harassing me, I might ask them to shut up. They retort that they have freedom of speech. Now I might argue with the person, but others might just sue or even hurt the other person. We have to be careful with this right, since people (mostly idiots) love to abuse any right, thinking that there aren't any consequences. I guess that's where the right to respect and disagree comes into play.

First of all, as a human, we all have rights that are written and some that are not recognized. A person should be able to say whatever it is they want. How it is perceived is another story. I believe by putting limitations on our rights, is agreeing that it is not a right. Offensive comments are offensive to an agreeing party.

In this day in age the right of freedom of speech needs to be carefullt monitored. What you write today on blog will remain in the virtual world forever. So if your opinion changes overtime you will always have to justify what you wrote previously. Yuo have the freedom of speech and you are able to use it just remember to think your thought out thoroughly as they will always be accesible to the public. E.S.

This is very controversial. Although it is said that our constitution gives us the freedom of speech. There are times at work, school or in any public arena, one might get the feeling that they do not have freedom of specch. You feel you might get fired, or the teacher might discipline you or you might get negative feedback in the public arena. If you are made to feel as though you said something wrong because someone did not like what you had to say, then you are not being given freedom of speech. People should be able to say what they feel as long as they are not being disrespectful.

Having the right to speech it is speaking in a method that your word can be a donation for others. This will offer you a good judgment of your action. It is important to have this right in society because people usually have trouble to express their feelings.

Currently, freedom of speech is a right that individuals practice to get a message across to other people. When a person wants to be treated better they use their right to speak. But a person cannot abuse the right of others when talking or writing. P.L

In the constitution it says that we have freedom of speach, I do not believe this is so. We have to be very careful about what we say because we can get in trouble with the law.

Being able to have freedom of speech is a privilege. Not everyone in the world has such a right as we Americans do. We ALL have the right of speech even though some countries forbid us. Having the freedom of speech is being able to defend ourselves and defend others who are being harmed. Also, we should respect each other as we are no different from one another. Freedom of speech is not only to defend our rights as a citizens of the United States or whatever Country. But an opportunity to defend our rights as human beings that we are.

Freedom of speech would allow people to understand and appreciate other people’s opinions. In our constitution we were given the freedom of speech. But, this right should have its own limits, as stated in the post. In protests in Egypt, the people stood up to their regime and let their voices be heard which has transformed their government forever. This right contributes to forming a more involved and open-minded nation.

As long as we respect others we should have the right to express our opinions freely, even if it does not go with what everyone else is saying.

Where there is not freedom of speech, there if simply not freedom at all. We all should have the right to express ourselves and be respected, even if other people don’t agree with us. GS

persons around you.

The freedom of speech is not truly freed if there are limits on its use. Each person views differently what free speech is according to their own guidelines that they follow in life. Due to this, we might not want others opinions shared so openly. This is why I believe that the right to freedom of speech should have limits for us all.

We should all have the freedom of speech naturally. As long as we do not disrespect people.

The right to freedom of speech is something that, in my opinion, cannot be taken away from anyone. When a child is born, it is born screaming expressing by speech (not necessarily words) what they feel. Speaking what you believe and feel is the only way others around you will understand the things that you feel are wrong.

Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak freely without censorship or limitations. The right to freedom of speech is recognized as a fundamental right each American has the option to enjoy. However, I have felt there have been situations in which I have been unable to publicly express ideas or information because it is not socially accepted.

Should freedom of speech include the freedom to tell lies? Who decides what is true and what is a lie? Should the young and impressionable be exposed to propaganda deliberately designed to make them hate others? If we deny the deniers the right to spread their venom, are we then putting our own right to free speech at risk? At which point does hate speech so directly provoke violence that it should be banned?

I agree with the 2011 revised right to freedom of speech as written in the Lady Philosopher's post. Often it is not what is said, but how it is said. A message can be easily lost if not delivered with care and respect. By the same token, it is important to really listen to what is being said - not just hear it and make rush judgments.

I believe we should all have freedom of speech, but in an unlimited fashion not as specified in this post. Whether we speak respectfully to someone or not depends on the circumstances. One earns respect, one isn't born with it. --Rosa F.

We were born with the Right to Freedom of Speech, however we have to be careful when we talk because we can be offensive. Also even if we are on the 21st Century, there is still people that die defending this right. Laura R.

Freedom of speech is truly a simple and inherent right but unfortunately there are tons of places and times that we are forced to censor what we say. Think about airports even, and thats a tiny example

Freedom of speech is something that we acquire since we are born. Yet sometimes we are not given this right. We have restrictions on what we can say or do. We all should have the right to say whatever we want whenever we want.

I believe we are all entitled to the freedom of speech right, but just because we have this right, doesn't necessarily mean that we should always exercise it.

freedom of speech is more suppressed by family than by the state, some people are brought up to be quiet and subdued.

Freedom of Speech whether by voice or writing is an immense form of expression and people in some countries (by nature of their gov.) have to refrain from voicing their thoughts due to not having freedom of speech. I agree on the right to freedom of speech as long as it is used in a correct manner and form.

I totally believe in the freedom of speech. I think everybody has the right to say whatever they want to whoever they want.

I believe that everyone should have the freedom of speech. Unfortunately, not everyone in this world can say what they feel. In many countries, if you express yourself you run the risk of getting killed or arrested. We all have a mind and we should be entitled to speak it as we please. We take this for granted. Here in the United States, we have the options of stating our mind and making a difference in the world. It is very unfortunate that in my family country, Cuba, we are not entitled to do so.

Even though everyone is born with the right to speech, this freedom is constantly taken away from people. Therefore, I believe this freedom should be conceived more often; however it should be used carefully in order to maintain mutual respect.

Words are very powerful and once spoken cannot be taken back, and even though we have the right to freedom of speech we have to exercise some kind of discipline when we say things and how we say things.

Although we constantly agree and disagree with one another, we all have the right to the freedom of speech. Despite the vague definition in the laws, we have the right to express what we feel in a respectful way. -v.p.

I believe speech above all is a very powerful tool, in order to allow everyone the opportunity to express this gift everyone should have the freedom of speech. Yet something about it raises my attention. Seeing that words can be so powerful for instance the NAZI condemning innocent Jews through the use of powerful verbal speeches can be a negative and destructive use of this right. I think with power comes responsibility, we have the responsibility to use speech in only manners that are moral and though through.

Freedom of speech is very important to me. I speek my mind at all times and I really don't care who don't like it, I know plenty people wish I didn't have this right.

I believe that the right to speech is essential as a citizen here in the Unites States of America. If this right is used properly, we have the ability to make great changes. It is used to make a point across without disrespecting others as well.
