The Right to Sleep

Sleep deprivation is a serious obstacle
to taking care of the human body.
Medical researchers in sleep clinics
know the effects of lack of sleep,
from weight gain to sensory impairment to heart problems, etc.

No one shall be deprived the Right to Sleep.

If the right to sleep was to be denied,we as human beings wouldn't be alive because our body needs rest and without it we will gain weight. And many more other health problems will come before we become deceased.

I think we should have the right to sleep. If we didn't have sleep then our bodies wouldn't function properly. We would all be zombies. Sleep plays an important part in our lives.

I support this right 100%!. Sleep is essential for our health and well being. A Harvard study reported that people who napped regularly were 37% less likely to die of heart disease and boost creativity than non-nappers. The best time of a hectic day is the bed time. :)

Everyone has the right to sleep. If we didnt have the right to sleep, I think there would be very angry people walking around the world. Sleep is something we all need to have so we can function through out the day.

Without enough sleep our brains ability to function can quickly decline. Our brain is remarkable and will begin to fight to counteract the effects of having no sleep, however; it will operate less effectively and in turn will respond by lack of focus at first. With enough time, this can lead to possible hallucinations and the acquiring of psychiatric disorders. Possible side effects can be depression, slower reaction times, irritability, and hypertension to mention a few.
I believe that the right to sleep is not as considered in our country of the United States with a society that has ideals that Americans can do it all. With all the research that is investigated and known we are still expected to complete all of our obligations however way we are able to, with or without sleep. I miss my origins from Spain where they still to this day have a four hour lunch where they rest and nap for a few hours to help continue their day. We all should have the right to sleep to rest so that we may all function properly the way that are bodies where intended to do.

Sleep is critical to your personal health. Its like food, if you don't eat you will not function well. When I get a good night sleep I perform at my best, at school, at work, and at crossfit. I think people need to acknowledge their sleep cycles more often. It is unhealthy not to. You need to somehow fit your sleep schedule in such a way that they allow you to take care of your responsibilities at full potential. --KB

To start, the right to sleep can not be challenged. Our bodies will automatically shut down when sleep is needed and the body will acquire adequate rest.

Caring about how much you sleep should be a priority. Sleep is you body's recovery time and when your body uses your nutrients and brakes them down to take them to the right places. I've been I situation where I have to stay up for about three to four days straight because of my job, but there is a moment when your body is going to ask for that time to sleep. I believe that no one should interrupt anyone's sleep unless there is an emergency. Proper sleep time is healthy for your body and your soul. Taking naps is important because it's like recharging you body and you can continue with enough energy to continue your day. There are a lot of energy boosters out there that are promoted to give you at least 5 hours more of energy. These products can be harmful because they contain a lot of caffeine. Others drink coffee to recharge their batteries but this can be avoided by just taking a short nap in the middle of the day. In our society people think that work work work is everything, but people should be patient and take their time to do things. TAKE A NAP ITS HEALTHY!!! GIL RO

Sleep is what keeps me going. I need sleep if not I will not function at all. Everyone has the right to sleep. When you sleep you are relaxed, and everything is forgotten. Your in another world once you put your head on the pillow. Without proper sleep, health problems can occur. Sleep is what gives us a fresh start the next day. You feel better no matter what the issue is when you go to sleep. Sleeping allows us to have the right to dream. Sleep is needed always and should never be deprived.

I agree with those who are for the right to sleep. We all need to rest our body and mind. Yet too much sleep can be harmful. We all have the right to sleep but not excessively. That is why all babies and toddlers need naps.

I agree with this. Being deprive of sleep is another form of torture it deprives the body of energy and builds up stress and can cause major problems in the future. Therefore the right to sleep is exactly what it is a right that everyone has.

The right to sleep is very important. If you do not get enough sleep you will have no energy, be in a bad mood and start to develop health problems. We all need to sleep and it is vital to our health. How can someone be deprived from sleep and can function at the same time? EA

This picture is adorable. The right to sleep is definitely important and I wish it would be implemented ASAP so I can use it against my mother getting my out of bed. Sleep deprivation is a serious problem and has terrible side effects. It is definitely a problem amongst college students and I think more awareness should be made instead of just trying to ignore it with the use of energy drinks.

Since I am a heavy sleeper I would definitely agree with this right! I agree with Shivani, sleeping gives us the right to dream as well. I think that all beings have the right to sleep in order to recuperate energy and start each day off right. -v.p.

The term "beauty sleep" should actually be "healthy sleep" because of the many benefits of sleep. Lack of sleep can be dangerous when driving and results in poor productivity. In this over-wired world it is especially important to turn off the screens and get enough deep sleep.

Sleeping has many benefits such as better learning abilities and memory, better cardiovascular health, and better mood. Lack of sleep can cause lower metabolism which leads to weigh gain, high blood pressure, and a decrease in the immune system. Deprivation of sleep affects your whole body and it will eventually shut down on its own if it doesn't receive sleep. We all need a well rested body in order to be healthy human beings.

The right to sleep is very important among humans because without sleep our body would not be able to work at their fullest potential is like the rechargeable battery in your phone if you don't charge it, your phone wont give you all that it can within it's potential and eventually it will shut down. -- AN

Without this right I believe we would live in chaos. Our body always needs some rest. Even if its six or seven hours of sleep that is enough to recharge our brain. Sleep plays a role even with how you look. If you do not get enough sleep your appearance may not be very pleasant. Also people may be very cranky without sleep.

I agree 100 percent with this right. Actually, I am one of those persons that need to take a nap during the day in order to perform my duties right.

The right to sleep is very important due to the effects the lack of sleep could have on the human body. I know when I don't get the chance to close my eyes for at least seven hours, I can be someone completely different from my normal self.

I agree, everyone should have the right to sleep, but what happens in a situation that you are so overwhelmed, that you cannot make the time to sleep. When we sleep, it recharges our batteries. We work better and perform better when we are rested. But, I have realized that at times, we do not have that extra time available for a snooze. It is very sad because without sleep, one cannot function. Our bodies can only take so much until it shuts down on us. Sleeping is definitely a right that everyone should have but unfortunately, at times, we do not make the time to for it.

I believe in the right to sleep! As a college student, I have felt the effects of sleep deprivation. No sleep effects memory, weight, concentration, and health in general. Sleep is something that should not be played with. We need sleep.

Without sleep we wouldnt be able to focus, we would fall into a state of confusion, anxiety, stress, irritation, and probably go crazy. I believe we need sleep to stay functioning properly. In some instances sleep deprevation is a form of torture used to make an individual squeal secrets.

Sleep is quintessential to our lives. The right to sleep is very important, because with out sleep we become irritable, groggy along with the inability to make decisions or follow through with cognitive functions. The right to sleep helps prevent the downfalls experienced when sleep is not prevalent. Sleep is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

Yea I believe everyone should have the right to sleep. If we show up to work or school late, our superiors can't punish us because we have the "right" to sleep. Our bodies will know when to get up and go to work or school.

I agree, sleep is vital to our health. When I do not get proper rest, it effects my mood and state of mind. I am relaxed and calmer when I get my proper rest. Everyone should have the right to proper sleep.

Awwww look at the baby.

I agree with the right to sleep. With the lack of sleep, you won't beable to function right. With sleep I'm able to perform my daily duties with no problem.

I really do not see sleep as a right, I actually see it as a need and people can not controlled after a certain amount of time because it will happen automatically.

Sleep is a necessity for the body, it helps us to relax and feel rested. Sleep brings us a sense of peace. When we go to sleep stressed or mad towards something, when we wake up we feel better and are able to see a situation with a fresh mind. Taking care of the body is something that’s extremely important, that’s why no one should be deprived of sleep.

Not enough sleep does not make one feel good and affects us in many ways. I do know that not enough sleep effects the circadian rhythms on the endocrine system. Sleep restriction damages the body ability to regulate eating by lowering levels of leptin which is a hormone that tells the body when it has had enough. So with that said people tend to over eat.

Sleep is a revitalizer and it is one of the few things that we don't get enough of. Lack of sleep makes us cranky and irritable. A lot of our problems would be solved if we would just get some sleep. We need this right.

I never thought of sleep as a right. I mean, it's necessary. It's something we all need to do. Even if a person is sleep deprived there is only so long you can go without sleep. I don't think other people can take your "right" to sleep. --Rosa F.

With our heavy daily schedules, sleep depravation rate is very high. Our body needs rest in order to function in a proper way. Definitely, everybody should have the right to sleep. GS

Sleep is essential in taking care of our bodies. Just like the right to clean water, without sleep our bodies will shut down and be unable to combat diseases. Some people would consume sleeping pills every night just so they can get a full night’s rest. Sleep deprivation as many other devastating affects to our bodies and cognitive structure, like depression. But whatever the matter may be, sleeping is crucial to be taken away.

I love to sleep. As I'm writing this I'm currently working. I wish my job would grant me the right to sleep.

Sleep deprivation is sometimes used as a method punishment or extract information from our enemies. I can definitely understand why this right is important; as of right now I get about 3 hours of sleep each night. Maybe I should try to exercise this right some more. Gary Norris

Sleep, it is an essential part of our daily life. However, the reasons why humans need to sleep are often to relieve physical and mental fatigue. Lack of sleep affects us in our attentiveness, aptitude to reason, our humors and decision. When we sleep well it gives our body the opportunity to rest and restore itself. I like this right because it means a lot when we are super tired.

I agree with this right 100%. If I don't get enough sleep,I get up moody, tired and very irritable. Also when we suffer from sleep deprivation, our immune system gets affected, becoming unable to fight diseases as the common cold and the flu. Also it affects our ability to drive as we were driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Laura R.

I believe that we all most definitely have the right to sleep. We are not super-humans nor robots and we cannot function without having a proper amount of sleep. I once worked 16 hours straight and went over 24 hours with out sleep, and I felt my body shutting down on me. The body needs to replenish tissue which is a process that is accomplished through sleep.

I think that we sleep to let our brain cells repair themselves after a day of hard work controlling our body and all. When we start to feel tired, the brain cells start to send out hormones to the body to indicate that we need sleep pronto, we yawn, to get more oxygen in the body because we are slowing down.We need this right.

I agree with Janet, lack of sleep can cause improper functioning or unbalance in our body and some countries like Spain that take ‘ciestas’ value the right to sleep and rest. Everyone needs and deserves sleep, most importantly a restful sleep. – D.T

The right to sleep is more than a right, but a necessity. From a medical point of view our bodies needs this function in order to stay healthy and regenerate our body for tomorrow’s work load. Sleep is a healthy way of life and also helps the mind rest from the worries of the day. There are many medical benefits written about sleeping and the consequences of the lack of proper sleep. I have read that 7 to 8 hours of sleep is the proper amount of sleep per day. Any more than that lead to depression and less than that lead to serious medical illnesses. BY: L.J.B.R.

The right to sleep! Oh what would thou do without it? Sadly this is a huge issue in third world countries. It is enough pressure sleeping with the wars going on, but with the added stress of children being forced to work extreme shifts, it is unhealthy for anyone to go without sleep. This lack of sleep not only affects the child, but the families that the wages earned helps feed. This issue is also the same for parents who work unfair hours.
