The Right to Peace (Freedom from War)

I declare the Right to Peace (Freedom from War).

Here's the latest, biggest step in this direction.
The International Criminal Court (ICC), was established legally
at the end the 20th century (1998) by the Rome Statute.
It was put into force, ratified by 60 countries, in 2002.

The ICC did not waste time.
In June 2010, the ICC declared the legal difference
between aggression done by the state versus aggression done by the individual.
This makes government-enacted war a crime.
If war is a crime,
then any government that invades or attacks another is criminal.
Government leaders become liable.
No direct actions will be taken on this at least until 2017.

Post-WWII Nuremberg Trial prosecutor Ben Ferencz
has worked actively to make war a crime,
declaring that aggressive war is not a national right.

I think that every nation deserves peace. What needs to be taken in consideration is the reasons to start a war whether they good or bad.

I don't agree with war, innocent people always die and is always based on politic interests and not on the citizens ones.

I dont think anybody has the right to declare war without any punishment.

i believe this was absolutly neccesary, men that choose to go to war are not the ones that fight and they are taking the right of peace away from men that want to protect their countries and rights.

The idea of making war a punishible crime in hopes that this would stop wars is very idealistic.

The ICC is making sure that the government is committing crimes. But peace will only be made through the government.

I believe "war" is not a right, but a choice. A choice that when made, all possible outcomes, whether positive or negative, should weigh heavily on the governments mind because of all the consequences that it brings to people. D.B.

war is definitely not a right, but self defense is. it has been in our nature since the beginning of time. we strive to preserve our life. with that in mind, there is a huge difference between taking action against others who are harming us, and declaring to continuously harm others even when at one instance nothing is hurting us.

Terrance said...

War has been apart of this world since the beginning of time. It plays a large part in our protection, freedom, and of course our decision making. We all want peace and we all want a perfect government.

You reap what you sow, and karma's a b****. More violence we put out there, the more is going to come back and punch us in the face. I don't believe any country has the right to declare war on another because that's taking the other countries, and their own, natural right to a peaceful life.

To expect the right to peace and freedom from war is only to dream due to the many morbid thinking individuals we have in our societies. What we should expect is the right to peace and the protection from these individuals. However, we can always continue to dream......

My views on this topic are strong. War is not the answer. We grow up having our parents tell us that fighting isnt the answer and yet OUR GOVERNMENT fight all the time. The ones we love the most go out there and fight and i ask myself for what? Take for example football star Pat Tillman, he left the NFL to fight for his country, to fight for what he thaught was right only to die in the war while the government decided to HIDE what trully happened from his family. The government is full of lies, and yet they want a honest society. The government is so quick to judge cutrain coummunity and yet they dont take the time to look at the fact that they are just as bad. War is never the answer, we should be protected but I ask you are they really protecting us?

War is not the answer, but one has to answer to war if it is caused by those who disturbs peace. War has to be classified in different ways, there are conventional wars, civil wars, and what it is being fought "Global war on terrorism". People misunderstand the real reason why the United States fight in Iraq or Afghanistan, it is thought that America is still fighting a war against Iraq and Afghanistan. America is fighting a war against terror, and the main battle fields are exactly Iraq and Afghanistan. It will take maybe centuries before there is worldwide peace because not everyone is always happy with other's ideals or thoughts. I do not agree with war, but I do agree that if one is being attacked and dialog doesn't work, the best way to resolve any problem is by confronting conflict. GIL RO.

We can say whatever we want about wars, but sometimes wars are necessary. If it was not for the Civil War, most of us would still be picking cotton. The question is, is it just? Gary Norris

It is animal instinct to prove ones power over another, so we can say that war is something inevitable. Think about it this way, without pain there would be no compassion.

War is never a good solution but because of War we are Free and have rights. But is it a crime yes because many innocent lives are lost due to the wars.

You also have to consider what would have happen if recent wars did not occur. I think a war between two countries is just like a fight between two persons in a way. If a person does not fight back, his opponent will take advantage, and the same happens with countries. Now,I personally, don't like when somebody else takes advantage.

The ICC established a fine line between individual agression and state agression. I think understanding this concept in part makes this topic so controversial. We've been raised to stay away from crime but yet we see our country sending troops to fight against others. Although I don't think war is always the answer I can't say that I know of an answer either. I encourage and agree with Ben Ferencz which would make war a crime. But then agian, it seems almost impossible to do this effectively. Therefore I don't think we all have the right to peace. -v.p

I do hope that Ben Ferencz has triumph in trying to make war a crime. We should not live in a world that is surrounded by war and chaos. We deserve to live in peace and harmony, not have all those soldiers fighting for the wrong cause. By making war a crime then no nation would dare bring another war into the future. When there is war there is unnecessary blood to be spilled. Any Government who declares war should be absolutely liable and be put behind bars. When you take a look at any countries Government there is no sincerity from any of them. Why should people keep dying defending their country when our own Government cannot defend it? Why can people make that sacrifice but the Government cannot make the sacrifice to establish peace throughout the globe? This should be put into force and help us keep the freedom to peace.

tiffytiff305 said...

War is not a crime unless you make it one. If a country has to go to war then they should have a very good reason for it. Sometimes countries need to go to war because that is "the only solution." Sure, everyone prefers to live in a peaceful world, but is there such a thing? As long as there are bad people in this world we will always have war. This doesn't mean that we can't try to create peace. Every person makes a difference.

wimberly.rhonda said...

I think declaring war on another country or individual should be a crime. War brings about killing and killing is a crime in most countries to include the United States. What is different about war, when you kill innocent people?

Anonymous said...

peace is whats good for the mind, body, and soul. what is the leading cause of death, is what is opposite from peace, such as stress which can lead to high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks. Those are cases we really don't need

Sadly the reason for war is money, and as long as money is a motivator for countries, it'll be very difficult to stop war. I know my dream and most people's dreams is to live a peaceful life. D.E.

War is self inflicted by the leaders of the world. There will forever be war in the world, because we are all different and some of us have the power and potential to cause conflicts.

War is not a right but a choice. Many people go and fight in the war for our protection and our freedom. Unfortunately, in order to bring peace in the U.S., we need to set our grounds and many innocent people and soldiers are dying. The soldiers cannot determine who is good and bad because their lives are at risk. Hopefully, peace can come into the world soon.

War becomes a crime when it goes overboard and kills millions of innocent lives. Everyone deserves peace yes its true but no one will ever be at peace until they are in peace with them selves.

Rosa F. said...

War doesn't become a crime at a certain extent; war IS a crime. How can the government condemn millions of murderers when they commit the exact same crime to people of other countries? Practice what you preach. One should always have the right to be at peace with themselves as well as with others. War doesn't really solve anything and kills millions. What are the positive outcomes of that?

While we all definitely deserve the right to peace, do those who prevent others from experiencing their right to peace deserve it themselves?

Everyone on this earth should have the right to peace. Until people can comprehend that we all don't have to agree on the same things, but rather respect their opinions and find a fair common ground, this world will always have a war going on. The pompous egos of some of these leaders do not assist in facilitating the problem either.

In my point of view war is a choice not a right, but most people and governments think that it is necessary to resolve their differences. It is important to realize that every time a war starts bunch of people dies and for what? If at the end of it governments have not come out with a solution.

War should not be considered as a choice. It is still a form of crime even if it is backed by the government. Ben Ferencz is on the right track. If war continues to be accepted then we will never reach universal peace.

Esmeralda said...

This topic is controversial. When we say war is a crime people have to be specific. I believe that when you kill someone that is a crime. People who commit these crimes should be punished. However, when a state/country is being attacked by outsiders whether its one person or more they have to defend themselves. Now how do theses countries fight for their rights? People create a war as a defense mechanism. However, i do believe that innocent people are being killed and that is a crime.

RV said...

Innocent people should not be dragged into political conflicts.

I think any topic of war is very controversial, and yes it should be consider a crime because if nobody takes action to stop it we will be fighting one another for centuries to come, but my question is how would this be controlled ? How would the leaders be charge?-AN

In my opinion, war is all the way a crime.
However, as long as conflicts exist between governments; war will always be a threat.

I believe that we, as innocent civilians, deserve the right to peace as long as we aren't in present danger. Our government obviously believes that we deserve the right to peace until the peace is disturbed. In that case, I believe war is necessary, even though it is perceived as a criminal act.

War can be a fight for more resources or it can be a fight for freedom. Although war comes with certain casulties, sometimes it may be the only way out. For instance America only became independent after a series of brutal battles.

Everybody in this world deserves peace. I don't see the point in being involved in wars, all it does is crumble nations and do massive negative damage to the world. Things we NEED more of is peace. -GP

Of course everybody have the right of peace. I also agree that war is a crime because kill innocent human beings is a major crime. In the other hand, defend our selves from attack should not be considered a crime but a right.

In my opinion it’s a highly controversial subject. I like to think of it as:‘Peace instead of war. Love before hate and generosity not just us. We've become very aggressive egotistical individuals. I do agree on war being a crime, but if a country’s invaded that country has a right to defend back. Whether it’s by means of war, but shouldn't abuse that right. - D.T

War is a crime in my eyes. But everyone should have the right to defend themselves and not be found guilty.

kevin0121 said...

Without war we wouldn't know what peace is. Everyone has the right to peace, but in reality there isn't going to be peace. theres always going to be crimes happening everyday and wars going on from time to time. The majority of people have the same mentality of what peace is. But others see peace as them ruling their own country or the world.

Miglaude said...

Obviously war is not an effective way to resolve divergence. When there is war it affects everyone. It is a crazy moment, where you see your country, city are burning, exploding and people are crying in pain. We take a lot of time to create something. Why do we destroy in a minute…?

The idea of making war a punishable crime in hopes that this would stop war in general is very unrealistic. We need to have order in the world. I don’t like war but sometimes it necessary to set things straight. Some leaders of other countries only understand the language of violence. I have respect for the men and women, who give you and I freedom to breathe, walk the streets safely, vote, and be what ever we want.

War is a crime when war is started because of someone's race or religious preferences. This is a hideous crime and all participants if found should be punished, but there are times when war is necessary to bring order or to free the oppressed. War is never pretty and unfortunately some people lose their lives for the cause. Let's pray for our troops.
